Usually, when people feel down they reach out for unhealthy, high fat, high sugar foods to make them feel better temporarily. But what they don’t know is that there are some foods that can help in producing serotonin also known as the “happy hormone”.

Serotonin is a chemical messenger that can boost your mood by reducing anxiety and depression. Our bodies can make serotonin from the amino acid tryptophan; this amino acid can also help our bodies to produce the sleep hormone “melatonin”, which can then enhance our sleep quality.

Since tryptophan is an amino acid (small molecules of protein), consuming a high protein diet is the solution.

Foods high in tryptophan:

1. Eggs

2. Salmon

3. Nuts & seeds

4. Tofu

5. Turkey

6. Beans & lentils

7. Avocado

When you start taking care of your diet and feed your body the right food, you’ll start feeling more pleasure and happier. Food is not just for energy and weight control, it is there to give you the right nourishment to boost your mood and make you feel happy.
